After he purchased and renovated the building more than 15 years ago, it has become one of the area’s most sought-after small boutique vacation spots. From mid-December to mid-April, visitors to Maui and the Paia Inn can experience an exciting journey by booking a whale-watching trip via catamaran. Local naturalists and tour guides on board the well-equipped, family-friendly boats provide enlightening, entertaining commentary on the whales and their environment. Some local tour companies have racked up a nearly 100 percent success rate in whale sightings. 

According to Hawaii Magazine, some 10,000 to 12,000 humpback whales annually make the pilgrimage from Alaska’s chill waters to the warm waters of Maui. Right off the island’s leeward side, these whales rest from their journey, choose mates, and give birth to the next generation.
