Popular Interior Design Themes for Coastal Homes
Based in Hawaii, Michael Baskin is an experienced architect and builder with nearly three decades of experience as a licensed contractor. Michael Baskin of Hawaii is known for his designs which feature a refined sense of coastal style and harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Coastal style home design themes typically feature decor made with natural materials and inspire feelings of relaxation and comfort. The following design themes are popular for coastal homes and aim to seamlessly merge with their surrounding beach environment.
The beach cottage design theme often includes hurricane lamps, jute rugs, and rope accessories, and incorporates elements of vintage and shabby chic style. The contemporary coastal home design style also features natural materials and textures along with clean lines and bright sunlit spaces in the building design.
The nautical coastal theme is popular since it is versatile enough to be classic, bold, or chic. Nautical-themed homes often feature various hues of blue, a variety of fabrics, wooden and wicker furniture, clean white ornamental accents, and wooden flooring. Also a bold theme, the almost-paradise style aims to create a tropical oasis by incorporating nature-inspired design features including vibrant colors, palm tree motifs, woven textures, and wildflower rugs.

Want to See Whales? Come to Maui!
President and owner Michael Baskin has renovated the Paia Inn on Maui, Hawaii, keeping the inn's original historical use while meeting community needs. After he purchased and renovated the building more than 15 years ago, it has become one of the area’s most sought-after small boutique vacation spots. Michael Baskin’s property also wins fans among visitors to Hawaii for its proximity to the white sandy beaches of the Valley Isle, and its role as a gateway to popular activities such as snorkeling, windsurfing, and whale-watching.
From mid-December to mid-April, visitors to Maui and the Paia Inn can experience an exciting journey by booking a whale-watching trip via catamaran. Local naturalists and tour guides on board the well-equipped, family-friendly boats provide enlightening, entertaining commentary on the whales and their environment. Some local tour companies have racked up a nearly 100 percent success rate in whale sightings.
According to Hawaii Magazine, some 10,000 to 12,000 humpback whales annually make the pilgrimage from Alaska’s chill waters to the warm waters of Maui. Right off the island’s leeward side, these whales rest from their journey, choose mates, and give birth to the next generation.
An early morning boat ride, says the magazine, is probably the best, easiest way to spot the whales.
